Hifiman Ananda Stealth vs Ananda Nano Comparison

Hifiman Ananda Stealth vs Ananda Nano Comparison

We're exploring the differences between two of the best planar magnetic headphones under $500 in Canada, so lets get into it!

Both models debuted several years ago and have been replaced by the 2025 Ananda Unveiled. Instead of discontinuing models, Hifiman has tended to keep the most popular, best performing models in production but reduce the selling price, making several of their models extremely competitive performers.

The Ananda Stealth (black w/ silver grille) sells for $379.99 and the Ananda Nano (all Silver w/ black headband) is $499.99, but both models were significantly higher in price several years ago.

Both models share:

  • the same large oval ear cup, with plenty of room for your ears
  • ear pads deeper at the rear, with fabric facing the skin, which resists heating up over time, for better comfort
  • the same wide, soft, suspended headband, with no pressure points and excellent long wearing comfort
  • 3.5mm jacks in each earcup, used by all Hifiman headphones and many other brands, making it easy to change cables with other brands as needed
  • Both models are a significant upgrade from the XS in both sound and especially in comfort

While they are quite similar, lets look closer at the audio tuning.

Technology and Driver Differences

The largest difference is in the driver material, with the Stealth using the Neo Supernano Diaghragm, which is typically 1 to 2 microns thick, whereas the Nano is the lowest cost Hifiman headphone using the Nanometer Diaphragm, the most advanced technology - a staggering 2-4 times thinner than the Neo.

How thick is 1 micron? Incredibly, if you stacked 1000 of these Ananda Nano drivers, it would equal about 1mm thick!! Its mind bending stuff really!

Hifiman has been an industry leader for years in advancing thin membrane materials and how to use them reliably and effectively.

A durable, thin material is incredibly important, since the thinner the material, the less weight it carries, so it can have a faster, truer response. It makes a great base to work from when developing the driver.

Sound Signature & Tonality

Ananda Stealth is a fairly balanced tuning across the bass, mids and highs, with lots of detail, good punch in the bass and excellent clarity all round. It is a bit fuller than the Nano.

The Nano is skewed a little differently. The Nano leads with clarity, is fast,  ultra-detailed, with fast transient response and technically superior, but leaning towards neutral-bright. It is less warm and lighter in the bass, but very accurate.

Power Requirements and Impedance

Both headphones have similar power requirements. The Stealth dropped to a low impedance of 16 ohms but a fairly low sensitivity 93dB. The Nano sits at 14 ohms and 94dB.

Both are medium - easy to drive and ideally they will be used with some type of headphone amp, due to the lower sensitivity. Both  benefit from a clean source with good current output, so an easy rule of thumb is to avoid tube amps unless you have plenty of experience with which ones will perform well with low impedance, low sensitivity loads and use a headphone amp that is solid state and wall powered (as opposed to usb bus powered).

Who Is Each Headphone For?

Buy the Hifiman Ananda Stealth if: You value comfort, listen to some live (peaky) recordings (live mixes, live dj sets), prefer a slightly warmer, lusher or fuller sound in vocals and bass and want a great all rounder (these are not lush, but are a bit more so compared to the Nano)

Buy the Hifiman Ananda Nano if: You want the highest detail retrieval possible under $500, want fast, agile bass response, excellent separation of vocals & instruments from each other and like a little more emphasis on the highs
